Loraine walks along the boardwalk in Barataria preserve of Jean Lafitte National Park near New Orleans. It was relatively dry at this time of year in the moss covered Cyrus swamp. However, the Cyprus trees have little "knees" which act like snorkels allowing them to respire when the area floods. Just a few feet of elevation difference cause dramatic change in the amount of water present, so we were able to walk from Cyprus Swamp to Green Bayou to open marshland as we made our way ever-so-slightly down in elevation.
